Leafs still on Nieuwendyk's radar Paul Attfield Globe and Mail Update According to a report on tsn.ca, former Leaf forward Joe Nieuwendyk will meet with Toronto general manager Cliff Fletcher this week to discuss joining the team's management group. Fletcher's first attempt to lure the 1999 Conn Smythe winner north from Florida was rebuffed by Panthers GM Jacques Martin, who had Nieuwendyk under contract as an advisor. But that deal officially ended June 30, and the three-time Stanley Cup winner was free to walk away. The Oshawa, Ontario, native was drafted 27th overall by Fletcher's Flames in the 1985 NHL Entry Draft and spent the first nine seasons of his career in Calgary, bringing the 1989 NHL championship to the Alberta city for the first and only time. He played for the Maple Leafs in 2003-04 before he and teammate Gary Roberts signed with the Panthers before the 2005-06 campaign. | |||
