N.S. winery uses tech to be organic

Canadian Press

GASPEREAU, N.S. — A new Nova Scotia winery is embracing the technology of the future and the winemaking traditions of the past.

L'Acadie Winery, in Gaspereau near Wolfville, is Nova Scotia's first certified organic vineyard, and the winery has an environmentally friendly geothermal heating and cooling system.

The new operation is also producing organic sparkling wines, using a traditional method that's new to area winemakers.

Bruce Ewert, owner of the winery, says an independent certifying body accredited with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency inspects the vineyard for its organic practices.

Ewert says the winery, scheduled to open on July 20, doesn't use herbicides or chemicals on the vineyard.

He also said the valley economy is beginning to benefit from what he calls “winery tourism,” as visitors explore area vineyards and sample local fare.
