What to watch this weekend
JEFF BROOKE
From Saturday's Globe and Mail

The Globe and Mail's picks of the weekend television crop (all times Eastern):

1. WIMBLEDON MEN

Haven't we seen this movie before? World No. 1 Roger Federer will meet No. 2 Rafael Nadal in the men's final at Wimbledon for the third consecutive year. Not that anybody should complain. The growing rivalry between the svelte Swiss and the muscular, grunting Spaniard is great for tennis, even if it isn't great for the other 126 guys who entered the tournament. It'd be foolish to bet against Federer, the five-time defending champion. But just as with last week at the Euro 2008, we've got this sneaking feeling that fans at Centre Court might be chanting "Que viva Espana" when it's all over tomorrow. NBC, 9 a.m. Sunday.

2. WIMBLEDON WOMEN

Venus Williams plays her younger sister, Serena, in the women's final at Wimbledon. Even though it's the third time they've met in the last match at the All England Lawn Tennis Club, it's still quite incredible — two siblings both reaching a Grand Slam final. However, you wonder how intense their match will be. Can they put aside their sisterly love and family bond and go at each other's throat? Can they get a hate-on for each other? Maybe Serena will have to remember all those times Venus left her smelly socks on the floor. Maybe Venus will have to summon memories of how messy Serena left her side of the room. NBC, 9 a.m. Saturday.

3. TOUR DE FRANCE

Cycling is a dirty, dirty sport. Or at least it was. Organizers of the Tour de France would like to run a cleaner show this year to restore the sport's battered image, so it has barred just about everyone who's been connected to recent drug scandals, including last year's winner Alberto Contador and Barry Bonds. No, wait, Bonds is in a different sport. Anyway, let's hope for negative testing and positive cycling over the next three weeks. Beyond the drug scandals, the 3,500-kilometre race that winds through French villages and sunflower fields remains one of sport's great spectacles — part travelogue, part human-endurance test. This year's race begins without a prologue. OLN, 8:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.

4. RED SOX AND YANKEES

Neither the Boston Red Sox nor the New York Yankees are in first place in the American League East, which is probably surprising to everyone but the Tampa Bay Rays. But their weekend series is worth a look anyways -- not just to see historic rivals go at it, but to check out whether A-Rod's new squeeze, er, spiritual adviser, Madonna, is in the stands at Yankee Stadium. Sportsnet, 4 p.m. Saturday, 8 p.m. Sunday.

5. BLUE JAYS AND ANGELS

The Toronto Blue Jays can only wish that one of their players were dating Madonna — anything to take people's minds off the Jays' thorough mediocrity. Toronto is coming off a losing series to the lowly Seattle Mariners and its West Coast trip doesn't get any easier this weekend against the AL West-leading Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The Jays need, like, a prayer. CBC, 9 p.m. Saturday, 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

6. BRITISH GRAND PRIX

Formula One driver Felipe Massa crashed during practice yesterday for the British Grand Prix going 210 kilometres an hour. He was unhurt but, according to news reports, the "car suffered considerable damage." The media are so helpful. Anyway, Massa, who leads the F1 season standing, will be back on the track tomorrow trying to win his fourth race of the season. Presumably, he'll be in a different car. TSN, 8 a.m. Saturday (qualifying), 8 a.m. Sunday (race).

7. AT&T NATIONAL

This week's stop on the PGA Tour has to be considered a little disappointing. The AT&T National Hosted by Tiger Woods doesn't have a great field. It doesn't even have a Tiger. He's at home in Florida resting, with his surgically repaired and swollen knee propped up on a pile of his money. Even sadder, perhaps, the tour has instituted random drug testing, beginning at this tournament. Oh golf, thy innocence is lost. CBS, 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

8. U.S. OLYMPIC TRIALS — SWIMMING

Michael Phelps and Natalie Coughlin might be setting records left and right this week at the U.S. Olympic swimming trials in Omaha. But the real star of the meet is the Speedo LZR Racer, a high-tech swimsuit that's helping swimmers sail through the water like sailfish. Swimmers wearing the speedy Speedos have now set more than 40 world marks since the suits were introduced in February. Holy wahoo. NBC, 8 p.m. Saturday, 7 p.m. Sunday.

9. EUROPEAN OPEN

Justin Rose, Sergio Garcia and many of Europe's other top golfers have drifted home to get ready for the British Open, which begins on July 17. This week's European Open in London offers them a chance to tune up their games against an excellent field and get used to wearing rain gear again. Golf Channel, 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.

10. CAMPING WORLD GRAND PRIX AT THE GLEN

When we saw the name of the race at the Watkins Glen International road course this weekend, we got all excited, thinking they'd be racing Winnebagos or something. That'd be cool, eh? But no, RV parts supplier Camping World is just the sponsor of this week's IndyCar Series event. Sort of a letdown, eh? Scott Dixon hasn't been a letdown at the upstate New York race, now in its fourth year — the Kiwi's won the first three. ABC/TSN, 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

11. COKE ZERO 400 NASCAR

The first Saturday in July, a day after Independence Day. Daytona International Speedway. Coke products. It doesn't get any more American than this. TSN, 7 p.m. Saturday.

12. CALGARY STAMPEDE

The CBC has 90 hours of Calgary Stampede coverage over the next week or so, much of it on its CBC-Bold channel. That's a lot of bull riding, steer wrestling and chuckwagon racing. And why not? Some of the world's best rodeo athletes compete at the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth and the excellent prize money is no bag of corn. CBC, 2 p.m. Saturday (parade); CBC-Bold, 3:30 p.m. and 10 p.m.; CBC-Bold, 3:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. Sunday.
